My snake plant wasn’t doing well. Growing plateaued, leaves became soft and droopy. The soil remained moist even after weeks of not watering (thought i overwatered). Then i knocked it over by a mistake and there were very little roots (not smelly). Should i put it in water to see if the roots start to grow. Someone told me to put in leca balls. I did today. What are your thoughts (forgot to take a pic of the roots, but similar to this root system).

Mine did this because of the soil not fully drying. I cleaned off the smelly roots, put new soil in the pot and replanted. No water until the leaves were completely firm. That was 5 months ago and she’s fully rebounded and even has new sprouts!

Soil not drying out is why it has no roots. As soil breaks down, it can hold lots of water in the lower half of the pot when the top feels dry. Do not put it in water. Get it in a chunky cactus mix and forget about it. (Mine are grown in a 1:1:1 ratio of bark, potting soil and perlite). It needs a good drying out period. Then water it no more than once a month. They like to be ignored and always prefer too dry to too wet.

So leca balls are not a good idea?

I’d think leca is the exact opposite of what this needs! Leca/semihydro is great for plants that like to stay consistently moist, whereas snake plants like to be dry between waterings. As others said, I’d get it into a good well-draining mix (I use a cactus mix + added bark and perlite).
