Mosquito bits or systematic pellets
2 Me gustaAnd also sticky traps to get rid of the adults they are called fungus gnats
3 Me gustaZevo plug ins are amazing for this and I think Costco has been carrying a multipack with refills lately
1 me gustaYou’ll want some type of BTI, which you’ll add to the water for your plants to kill the fungus gnat larvae and eliminate the source. BTI comes in a few forms; I’ll list a few pros/cons so you can find what’s best for you: 1. Mosquito bits, as mentioned above: you basically prepare these like a tea and then water your plants with it about once/month. A little more effort but it’s infrequent and gives a big dose quickly for a rapid result. You can get a big bag very cheap. 2. Mosquito dunks: the same as mosquito bits but shaped into a sort of slow-release disc that you can leave in your watering can to deliver a little BTI every watering. Great if you don’t want to have to remember to treat because there’s less prep. Avoid if you tend to use clear jugs for your water that take more than a couple days to use up. When these sit in water and get light exposure you can get some fungal growth. Also cheap and probably the easiest to find at any hardware store. 3. Concentrated BTI formulations for houseplants: comes in liquid and powder forms but designed to mix into your water. Same process as mosquito bits but much less time/labor associated. Usually have to order online and costs more than the other two, but very convenient. Happy happy houseplant and pretty in green both make them
1 me gustaBTI is a natural and organic method to kill the gnats. I’ve seen people on social media claim that it’s unnatural and that more expensive alternatives are better, but it’s simply not true.
1 me gustaomg thank you so much 🥰
0 Me gustaGnats and other flies are normally the first sign of overwatering. I would let the soil completely dry out before watering again and it should take care of them.
1 me gustaTheir eggs can stay dormant in the soil for a long time, so letting the soil dry doesn’t make a huge difference. But it does deter adult fungus gnats from laying more eggs if the soil is dry
3 Me gustaThis can be part of the solution depending on the variety and size of your collection but is also insufficient for a lot of people. Send_nodes is correct that the eggs can go dormant until you water again. Depending on the number and types of plants, it’s also often not feasible to have everything dry out at once. This means the adult gnats will just go to a different pot that needed watering when one is dry. Many plants also don’t tolerate drying out all the way. Fungus gnats from a cactus pot? Definitely a sign of overwatering. Fungus gnats from a calathea pot? Consistent with preferred conditions for that plant.
0 Me gustaI just left a glass of Gatorade sitting for a couple days and all of the little flies flew into the Gatorade. It was very easy and I haven’t had a problem with the flies since! 🤷👍
