Hi all ❤️ I just got my first Alocasia Frydek Variegated (it’s so difficult to find it in Ireland but I was look for paying €10 in this cut) and I'm so excited! It has been growing in a mix of Fluval stratum and perlite, and so far it seems happy — but I’ve noticed some green moss or algae starting to grow on the substrate. Is that normal or should I be worried? Also wondering: 🧐 When’s a good time to check the roots in this mix? I want to make sure it’s healthy but don’t want to stress the plant. Any tips or advice from folks who’ve grown this beauty in semi-hydro or Fluval setups would be amazing! 🙏🏼 Thanks in advance 💚

Algae is 100% normal, especially if you’re keeping your plant in a clear pot and not a decorative one. Don’t worry! Regarding the roots, since you have a clear pot, just monitor them externally rather than removing the plant from the substrate.

Sydney Plant Guy has a YouTube video of a similar method with his Frydek. I recently got an Anthurium in a similar set up. In my experience Alocasias do well in semi hydro!
