I am new to indoor plant owning… I was gifted this Chinese evergreen and I can’t seem to make it happy. I’ve tried different types of lighting, drying soil and having it moist, but the leaf still tend to curl under on a few. I do have new growth so I am hopeful that something’s going right with it but how long would it take those leaves to un curl and get back to normal? Would it be worth repotting and making sure that the roots are OK?
The new growth is actually a really good sign. 😊 Chinese evergreens (Aglaonema) can curl their leaves from inconsistent watering, low humidity, temperature changes, or other stress, and once an older leaf has curled it may not completely flatten back out even after the problem is corrected. I’d pay more attention to what the new leaves are doing. If the new growth is coming in healthy and the plant isn’t declining, I wouldn’t disturb the roots just to check them. Keep it in bright indirect light and water thoroughly when the top couple inches of soil have dried (I check mine with a bamboo chopstick) rather than switching between keeping it moist and letting it get very dry. I’d only pull it out to inspect the roots if you start seeing things like continued yellowing, wilting despite moist soil, a bad smell, or rapidly worsening growth. Right now I’d give it some consistency and let the new growth tell you how it’s doing.
12 J'aimeTHANK YOU!! It’s been in a new less bright location for about 1.5 weeks now and there are two areas new growth, so maybe it is happier and healthier :).

I have some other kind of agleonema but mine will curl slightly just from me moving the pot around on the floor. It’s technically 6 of them in a single big 1’ pot as that’s how it came form the store, but I think the curling is just a normal thing the plant does to conserve moisture when the environment changes at all. My dogs will hit it with their tails then those leaves will be halfway curled for the rest of the day. As long as it has consistent watering and light the curling shouldn’t be a problem.

I have 4 of these propagated from a momma plant over many years. They are hardy but finicky at the same time if that makes sense. It seems to do well with indirect light but can tolerate a little less. I check soil as it does not like to be dried out. This has been my experience. I have several varieties of Chinese evergreens. They are all so lovely… ☺️
