hi everyone! new plant parent here. I have been doing some research on repotting but I keep hearing different things. I know some of mine definitely need to be repotted because their roots are very overgrown, but how do you know how big of a nursery pot to buy? Also, what is the best soil mixtures to use? thank you!

Repotting tricks 101: Repot in clear, good drainage pots, look at your root ball, not the plant, if your plant came in a 4" pot and the roots fit snugg in a 4" pot, size up to a 5" pot, only go up 1-2 inches bigger than the root ball.. Now for the soils, cactus and succulents they get a cactus and succulent mix, it's very chunky, I get soil sunrise and add very chunky perlite to it! Amazon has it cheap, Philodendron, Monstera, All Tropical, get Aroid mix, it's chunky Bark, chunky perlite, Biochar, worm castings, pumice, I use Molly's Aroid Mix with chunky perlite, also can get it on Amazon... Anything else just ask...

Your nursery pot should go up about 1-2 inches in diameter !

You want to go 1 to 2 inches above the pot the plant was in. If you go to big you will risk root rot and I learned that the hard way and lost a ton of plants cause I thought the bigger the better. The soil will depend on the type of plants you have so that's hard to answer. If you tell us the type of plants you have it will help to offer the best soil for the plant.

Go up at least 2 in pot size this will give you 1 in all around. I have a variety of pot styles. It really depends on the plant. Although clear pots help you see the roots I don't particularly find them attractive. If my plant is tall and perhaps a little top heavy like some cactus are I use a pot that is wider than it is tall. This creates a better base and the plant doesn't tip over as easily. Always choose a pot with drain holes unless you're doing hydroponics. Has others have mentioned the soil depends on the plant type. Most plants require a soil that has good drainage.

A little advice on your Calathea, is it a Rattlesnake? Well, whichever they love very high humidity, I just got one about 2 weeks ago, I have to keep her in my Greenhouse Shelf, with temps 75-80 and humidity 65-75 or she is very fussy, also, use rain water to mist and water her... Tap water could harm her, Calathea can't tolerate the metals that are in tap water. They're very pretty plants but to darn picky! They also like chunky Aroid mix or coco coir.. I put mine in Molly's Aroid Mix with chunky perlite, she seems to like it..
