Should I use Miracle Gro Protects against over and under watering soil for my aloe vera or should I trade it for Miracle Gro Succulent soil?

Succulent soil, preferably with extra perlite added in. Regular miracle grow has poor drainage, so it’s a bad potting medium for succulents.

Neither is going to be the best potting medium for your Aloe Vera. Even succulent soil contains too much peat moss or similar “soil” material. I personally add lava rock, perlite, and sand to my succulent/cactus blend. The lava rock and sand are newer additions as I keep plants outdoors, but I’ve kept succulents in perlite amended soil before, as long as I am careful with watering

I’ll definitely look into sand since I heard it’s a good mixture with lava rocks for Aloes, thank you Moon!

I’d use Espoma’s cactus and succulent mix, and return the miracle grow if you haven’t opened it. It’s infamous for how much peat it contains and being a quick plant killer. I’ve tried their succulent mix in the past as well, added an extra bag of perlite, and the soil remained completely moist for 14 days. Nearly killed everything I repotted with it. I managed to save them with another repot with Espoma. I try to avoid Miracle Grow anything at all costs these days, and either use Espoma or Foxfarm’s soil for my plants. Hope this helps!

That does sound better than Miracle Gro, I truly appreciate the good recommendation! I’ll definitely return this bag and get that brand! Thank you Adrian 😊

No problem! I see a lot of folks new to houseplants get the brand then make a post saying they don’t know what they’re doing wrong with their plants. I don’t want anyone new to plants to get discouraged and think they’re doing something wrong when it’s just their soil. It’s really awful to see cause unless you’re in the know, a part of the community, or someone tells you, most folks think its a good brand cause they’re sold in all the box stores, but those stores just have a deal with MG to sell their brand exclusively. I just try to warn anyone before they go through the same miracle grow horrors too many of us on this app have 😔 btw, if its hard to find Espoma or Foxfarm in a box store (Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc.), I get it from Ace Hardware or my local nurseries, and I’ve found calling ahead if stores claim to have it available online is always helpful. Good luck!
