My Peruvian old man cactus is not growing. Like at all. 🤦🏻‍♀️ In 2 years I feel like he may have gotten a teeny bit of girth on him, but no height. Is my pot too big? When I repotted last month, his roots were about 3/4” from the bottom. Would he prefer a tighter pot? I live in an arid climate and he is under grow lights for full sun exposure. It adjusts for sunrise/sunset every day so it mimics the seasons. I don’t over-love him and he’s plenty dry when I water. I planted in cactus succulent/ soil with extra perlite for drainage. I fertilize according to schedule with succulent fertilizer. He looks healthy so I’m truly hoping I haven’t been loving on a dead cactus for 2 years. He’s just.. shunted.

It looks like it’s still alive. I think it really would be happier in a smaller pot. Plants usually put more energy into filling the pot with roots before they put the energy into growing the foliage/plant. Cacti like to be snug in their pots, and it might actually grow more in a smaller pot.

Agreed! Something semi shallow is great for cacti

how close to the light is your cactus? is it a full spectrum growlight? those things matter. i’ve recently moved a lot of my succs/cactus to “mollys succulent mix” — no soil and very chunky, easy to repot and check roots

Tbh, I wish I could remember about the full spectrum. I believe they are, they have red and white lights. It’s sitting about 12” below the light but I’ll double check my lighting situation. My other cacti seem to be doing well under those lights but this little guy is perfectly content to do nothing. 😊

You’re doing better than I was when I had one like that! Don’t brush the hair! Lol I found a few dearly departed ones this spring that I was watering and talking to 😁
