Does anyone know what might be wrong with my Prayer Plant? It has been looking sick for months with crispy brown leaves and rotting leaves in the centre. I thought I might be overwatering so I stopped that but I am still watering once it is totally dry. I also stopped using tap water about 6 weeks ago and now using rain water. Nothing is helping, it just looks sad. It’s in a pot with drainage and by a window with not much sunlight. Would love to hear suggestions of how to nurse it back to health 🙂

I think that may be a calathea! Which if it is, it is completely within its temperament to be absolutely unhappy with everything one does or does not do to it👍🏻

A true maranta (prayer plant) looks very similar but with less drama

You could try distilled water one, with increased humidity

Yeah, not a prayer plant. A Calathea Orbifolia. Soil needs to be loose, fairly dry between waterings, RO or distilled water, and high humidity. Aim for 50 to 55%. The leaves are crisp but the other issue is the drooping, which is usually from not enough moisture. Check the roots for health. I would suggest switching from rain water. If you are collecting it in a city, the rainwater may contain contaminants. Do not use bottled spring water. It contains minerals. The plant can be a pain but when thriving it is a beautiful plant.

Yep, this is most likely a humidity issue. They like constant higher moisture. Only way to solve this is to either put it next to a humidifier or put it under glass. Don’t let the soil dry out, it likes soil evenly moist. It also should probably have a bit more sunlight. Calathea leaves are typically purple underneath. When they’re not, it typically means it’s not getting enough light. Good luck!
