How to prepare water? Hi green fingers, I have a question on water. I live in city center apartment and tap water is all I got, no rain water or distilled water available as suggested by planta. Is there anything I can do to reduce the harm to plant caused by tap water?

Tap water conditioner! It’s a liquid used to remove all of the bad stuff from tap water. It’s made for doing water changes for fish but I’ve also used it for my plants which need distilled water

I’m today-year-old to learn there is such a thing!

I didn’t know until I got fish! A bottle costs like £8 an you only need 1ml for 2litres so lasts ages

Yeah use the water conditioner that people use for their fish tanks. It removes all the bad! And it’s pretty cheap.

Boiling the water could also work

I sometimes use leftover boiled water (at room temperature of course) to water plants…. So I was accidentally doing the right thing?

I’ve read somewhere that just letting tap water sit for a few days can also help to remove like chlorine and fluoride 😄

I’ve always used straight tap water. But I’ve also usually done easier propagations, so that might be why it works so well.

Why no distilled water? I buy mine from Walmart. I get the Parent’s Choice gallons from the baby section because it is cheaper than the other gallons of distilled water in the drink section. It is only $1.26/gallon here, and I get 3-5 gallons a week (I have reptiles and tarantulas I use the water for as well so that is why so much). I probably go through 2-3 gallons of water per week for my 60+ smallish houseplants. So $4 a week isn’t a bad investment for good water. You could also look at an under sink RO system. I think you can get a decent one for $100-$200.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’m in the UK and there are no Walmart in my city … but I’ll check baby section of my local supermarket next time! I did checked drinks section before and there were only two drinking water: spring water (which contain natural minerals ) and, sparkling spring water!

Tap water works for most plants except the sensitive ones like calatheas. For my calatheas I use a brita pitcher and it’s worked for me so far.

Thanks for the reply. Good to know Brita works! I have a Brita pitcher for my own drinking water. After reading all the comments I decided to combine two methods: Brita filtering the tap water to get rid of hard water minerals, also set the water still for few days to get rid of fluoride and chlorine

You could add chlorine remover! It takes out all the bad stuff in tap water and makes it into distilled water

I’m in London UK 🇬🇧 a very herd water area. I predominantly use tap water that’s been sitting (uncovered) for a few days and had no problems except for a Prayer Plant that couldn’t handle it. Distilled water is an option but it’s an expensive way of watering your plants and has NO nutritional benefits and you’d have to use a plant food supplement as well to get any growth.
