Hi there! I am a Newby to plants and trying to learn how not to kill some that have a reputation for being “easy.” I bought a luscious Boston Fern from my local Lowe’s over the summer, and it started to look not right after a bit. It was losing a lot of its green, with exposed woody bare stalks. After some investigation I figured it was extremely “root-bound” and proceeded to separate it into 2 pots. It was kinda difficult as the plant was so big and the root ball so dense, but today I decided to just snip all the long strands that were bare at the base. As you can see from the photo of the pruned plant it is getting some new growth- but this is only half of the original plant (in the original pot, imagine how locked-in the whole root ball was!) and it still looks pretty dense in the new pot. Do you think I need to separate it further? Anyone with experience in Boston Ferns? Thank you:)

I did the same thing with my Boston from Lowe’s last year! I had to use a tarp underneath it on the kitchen floor to repot it. I think my bread knife was how I sawed through the root ball. It gave me 4 pots of ferns! Six inch pots and I have one in a self watering hanging pot that is doing great and the rest are in ceramic pots. So I believe these plants are happy with any size pot you give them. I want to keep them small so I can handle the repots easier and on the table 😁
