Hey so my alocasia black velvet has got at least 8 little shoots coming out of its base. I know these are signs that she’s doing well and happy, but should I be doing something with them? Im also wondering if they will grow little off springs if I bury them?

They are the beginning of corms but they are too skinny at this stage to be removed safely. I had success sprouting at this level when I knocked one accidentally but it does not live long after getting their first leaf. Here is an example of a black velvet variegated corm I bought to give you an idea.

Thanks for the input! I didn’t realize these produce corms! I have successfully grown a corm from this plant before which was a little bigger than the one in the photo. I had found it when repotting it had just fell loose from the soil. Here is a photo of it now :)

Absolutely gorgeous! I love them! And yes depending on the alocasia, sometimes they do corms, sometimes they’re hey do offshoot and sometimes they do both

Thanks! Do you have any suggestions on helping the shoots grow? Like should they buried or something cause I noticed one of mine dried out and looks dead :(

The issue is that is you bury them, you might end up rotting your stem. It is not uncommon for alocasias to start working on them and then absorb them. We use them to get new plants but to the plant, they are as much potential babies as they are energy storage. That’s why one of the reason that they should not all be taken off if a plant is getting repotted and has a weak root system as an example.

You could bury it, but I would only do so if you can without increasing the soil level around your main stem. Otherwise, this has the potential to lead to rot on your main plant. If there is a gap, you could maybe just put a pinch of moss so the offshoots gets signal that there is humidity below and send roots down.

Thank you, will see how they develop, then try moss or more soil if they look like they may need it

Honestly you let them be! They will either further develop or they will get reabsorbed by the plant.
