Does anyone know what is doing this to my spider plant? I tried to get a diagnosis but it always says overwatering 🤨

yes overwatering — that soil is hanging onto water too long

I thought it might be from a white moth that has been laying eggs on my roses and cabbages. I thought putting it in a breathable clay pot would be better but I should have used less peat in my soil. Thanks for your help! It’s nice to get some reassurance 😊

I have quite a bit of fine orchid bark in the mix for mine

I’ll have to try that next time. I used coco chips and they probably stay too soggy and I repotted it twice because the last pot stayed too wet. This is the best growth I’ve seen so far so I’m hesitant to repot again so soon. I think the hurricane we just had might have gotten it wet even though it’s inside my covered porch. I probably should have moved it

I wouldn’t worry too much about it being overwatered this time. If i’m correct, overwatering which can result in root rot and other problems is really only worrisome if it is consistently occurring. I’d just do your best to make sure it doesn’t get any more water for around 1-2 weeks so the soil can really dry out. Don’t worry these plants are pretty drought resistant. A moisture meter wouldn’t be bad idea either as soil can feel dry on surface but still be quite wet at the bottom. Also, I agree with eatyacarbs that whenever you end up repotting, which doesn’t have to be now, that you do a more airy/chunky mix that is roughly 1/3 potting soil, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 orchid bark. Sorry for the wordy response just really enjoy talking about this stuff!

Thanks so much for your advice! I do have a moisture meter but I have not been using it for a while but I will go back to using it for this one. Most of my plants are tropical and carnivorous and they like water. I should remember that this one is more like a succulent I guess 😁

Looks overwatered. The plant standing upright while the leaf tips yellow and dry are signs it’s getting too much water. It will droop, become pale and have drying leaves if it’s under watered. Water when the soil is dry and not by a calendar or Planta notifications. Use a bamboo meat skewer or similar tool to test if the soil is dry to the bottom. Just let the skewer sit in the soil for about 15 to 30 minutes to see if the stick comes out damp. Be careful testing the soil because spider plants have thick roots and repeated poking of the roots with sharp objects can damage them leading to infection and subsequent rot. Mine are in a standard potting soil mix with extra perlite to get more drainage.šŸ€šŸŖ“

Thank you! I forgot about the chunky roots they have that makes them drought tolerant. The struggled with this plant for a year now and was very excited about the new growth since putting it out on my porch. I’m thinking of rotating it to get the other side nice and full. I started with a small plant that my daughter gave me. I’ve always wanted a spider plant and I am determined to keep it alive 😁

They are a favorite of mine. I have way too many. Fertilize it at least once a month. The alternative is to fertilize twice a month with 50% diluted liquid fertilizer. I add SuperThrive plant vitamins to boost growth.

Okay that’s good to know I have some stinky Espoma plant food at the moment. I’ll have to look for the vitamin supplements. Thanks ā˜ŗļø
