Nervous. As of this week I am caretaker of two large hibiscus for a friend who is out of country for an extended time. She’s clearly ready to be up potted. I know this isn’t the ideal time of year to repot. 1) what kind of soil mixture should I use? 2) anything else I should know? I really don’t want to stress or damage them! Thanks in advance.

The roots coming out the bottom should not be the only indication to use to start a repot to a larger pot. Those exposed roots could be tapping into the excess water in the drainage tray/saucer. Always throw away the drainage water and the roots that sit in the drainage saucer will die off. Remove the pot to look at all of the roots. Look for root bound conditions. There are more roots than soil when the pot is too small. The plants don’t look like they are suffering from being root bound. There is no obvious yellowing and root rot from blocked drain holes. I recommend waiting to repot if the roots are not excessive. 🪴🍀
