Hello! It’s hard to see but those little yellow/white looking dots are bugs. I was dusting this plant two weeks ago and saw the dust moving! I washed the plant really well and then sprayed neem oil all over it. I did it again last week and didn’t see any bugs. Today I happened to look at the little guy and there were bugs moving all over a few leaves. I washed it again and sprayed neem oil. But I’m thinking maybe this is a pest that doesn’t hate neem oil. I looked online and the closest shaped peat looks to be thrips. Anyone know if little dash/hyphen shaped whitish bugs are thrips? And what’s the best way to get rid of them? I’m ready to toss the plant away because I’m afraid they will spread.

I think you are correct about it being thrips. If the leaves are not too delicate you can try using masking tape or a lint roller to pick up as many as possible. If you don't want to use a chemical spray, you could follow the sticky treatment with insecticidal soap or Captain Jack's which is an organic spray. I would not give up, your plant still looks quite nice. Thrips are especially fond of developing flowers. So if you have any flowering plants I would move them away and treat them as well. Be sure to get the backs of the leaves.

I really don’t want to give up because I figure if I want to continue having plants, I have to learn how to deal with pests. Par for the course. I isolated this plant as soon as I saw anything and inspected all my other plants. I don’t think they spread. I will look into Captain Jack’s. Thank you.

I got rid of thrips using a mixture of Dawn dish soap and water. Spray it down in every crevice using a spray bottle. Isolate from other plants. Also spray down any nearby plants. Spray the plant daily for like two weeks. (Guessing on that, maybe Google this too…) I got a high powered jeweler’s magnifying glass with a built in light for like $6 at Ocean State Job Lot. Definitely worth having one on hand for stuff like this.

I have Dawn and can try this immediately. Thank you!

Are the roundish or narrow and kinda pointy rice shaped? Unfortunately bugs can become tolerant to pesticides, it's why I rotate mine

They are narrow and rice-like! How do you get thrips? My plants are all indoors and I haven’t introduced a new one in months. This particular plant is months old and never had a problem as far as I know.

Sounds like thrips than. They can come onto the house on you or something you bring in. They are terrible fliers. But they can fly in like a housefly too. Get a good pesticide and treat this plant and any near it. Personally I treat all plants if I see thrip signs, cuz FML if I had a huge outbreak with as many as I have. And treat for at least a month, their life cycle can be up to 45 days. Predatory mites is a great option to combat thrips too.

Adult trips have wings so they just fly in. I suppose they could come in on clothing as well.
