I don’t have soil so I’m not too sure if it’s smart for me to take it out and check

Yeah I went out of town for a few days but I thought it would be fine because I followed the sick plant guide but maybe it wasn’t enough :(

Trim back or remove the dead leaves make sure it’s watered and just watch it. Mine was like that and I trimmed the dead leaves off and it took off and grew like crazy

No just cut off where you see brown or yellow leaves

      Which fertilizer do you recommend?

Yes, prune off all the damaged and dying leaves, fertilize with an all-purpose fertilizer (all fertilizer packages have an guaranteed analysis on it. It will be three numbers you want to choose a fertilizer that the three numbers are close like 12 12 12 or 12 8 12. You don't want any one number to be a lot larger than the others. When you were able, tip it out of the pot and check the roots. Trim off any mushy or bad looking roots. They should be white or light brown or green. If the pot does not have a drain hole, change pots. Fresh soil never hurts.

So what should I go out and buy tomorrow from Walmart or a plant store? Any recommendations??

There are many brands that will be fine. Miracle-Gro is a common one. You dissolve it in water according to the directions and just water it in. One more comment, sometimes you want the numbers to be different for example if you want something to flower the middle number would be larger but for this purpose you want an all-purpose fertilizer.

By the numbers, they mean the numbers on the label of the fertilizer which stand for the NPK ratios of that fertilizer. NPK stands for Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K). So for example, 12-12-12 fertilizer has 12% of the package is Nitrogen, another 12% is Phosphorus and another 12% is Potassium. I think this is info overload for just getting started and wanting to save this plant! You can try a plant food liquid fertilizer for indoor houseplants or sprinkle granules on top of the soil (like Osmocote) and then water.

Get Miracle-Gro all-purpose plant food with analysis numbers that are the same like 12 12 12 or 20 20 20. At some point in the future you may have a plant that you want to flower then you would get a fertilizer with a different formula but you can cross that bridge when you come to it later. or

If you still feel confused, I would go to a garden center rather than Walmart or even home Depot. Garden center personnel are more likely to be able to help you find what you want. They'll be able to show you the numbers that I refer to. Walmart and home Depot personnel often don't have enough knowledge to help you.
