Hello all, I bought a terracotta pot for the hydrangeas that will be placed in the outdoor patio. I read that it’s good to apply 1-2 coats of sealant (Flex Seal liquid rubber spray) inside the pot to prevent soil from drying out too quickly, due to the porous nature of terracotta. Just wanted to get your thoughts (is it necessary? Is it harmful to the plants? How effective?) if you have experience of doing the same. Thanks! J

If you’re really set on using the terracotta for hydrangeas, that could be a possible solution? I feel like planting in ground is always the best solution for Hydrangeas because it’s definitely their preference. But when using a pot, it needs to be rather large and something less porous in material would probably be best; not sure if it’s worth attempting to plant it in terracotta even with the extra effort of spraying it! That’s just me though, whatever you do, I hope your plants thrive 💙 Just make sure it gets plenty of water 😊

I’d save the Terra cotta pot for a plant who would benefit from it. Sedum, aloe vera, thyme, rosemary, lavender all would thrive in that kind of pot. Stick with a glazed pot (still can be clay, but glaze on outside prevents fast evaporation. I’ve had a hydrangea in a pot in my porch for 3 years. They do enjoy the ground more but a large pot will still allow it to grow and bloom.

Thank you both. Ground isn’t an option, sadly. I thought my pot would be big enough (10” w x 24” h) but apparently it’s best to have something about 16”-24” wide! Will take another trip to the garden centre and pick the right one.

Update: Found an inexpensive 17” x 19”, resin, weather resistant pot at Home Depot - most importantly, it’s the right size for the plant and my patio!
