I’m really confused about misting. I like this app a lot but it’s constantly telling me to mist my plants. I thought misting was no longer looked at in a positive way - can cause fungus, not really effective in increasing humidity, etc. What is everyone’s opinions on misting? Yay or Nay?

I mist. It does help, especially high humidity loving plants. As long as your home has circulation you shouldn't get fungus issues.

Also if you want to not mist, you can turn the option off

I really don't know how to type all of this out because I have heard so many pros and cons to it. It can be a temporary way to keep them clean until you do a shine. I think it's bad in sunlight because it creates a magnifying effect on the leaves and can damage them. I think it's good because it's just like how it feels good on skin, like a mini shower in the dry air. I think it entirely depends on your location and its climate, what time of day, if at night, if theres a nice draft, etc.. just idk a TON of factors... because of this app I started doing it almost like an experiment. I live in illinois, so it gets cold and dry and I want to see if it can maybe improve some of my plants, if anything at all.

I don’t mist a ton but I’ve never had it cause any fungus! I live in a fairly dry apartment and I mist only my high-humidity-loving plants about once a day. I started doing this when my alocasia started complaining (dry spots on leaves despite healthy roots and good watering habit). It helped the problem!

The only misting I do is to help new leaves unfold. The reason is twofold. Misting doesn't raise ambient humidity in your home, so it's not going to help longer than the few minutes it takes for the water to dry. Second reason, I'm lazy 🤣 I'd rather do things that actually raise the humidity throughout the room/house than look at which plant needs misted on what day lol

I think these are the biggest factors for me as well. I do so much for my plants and they haven’t noticed that I don’t mist them. They’re doing fine without it, so I’ll give in to the laziness.

Precisely. I have a hygrometer near all my plants and misting really doesn't change much for them. The humidity jumps for an hour or so and then it's back to normal. Since I've stopped misting, none of my plants have complained so meh. Too lazy to do it and I've turned off all misting reminders.

I am pro-misting, but you do have to do it frequently for it to actually increase the humidity. Only misting when planta suggests will not be enough to impact humidity, in my experience. I mist my little jungle a few times a day when I walk by it! I can tell it’s effective because my plants will ‘sweat’ on their own when I stay on a frequent misting schedule. Fungus is really only an issue if the soil isn’t drying out properly, and when I mist I focus on the foliage instead of the base of the plant.

I have been thinking about misting more often just to see if it actually does make a difference (especially for my prayer plants). I like the idea of doing a quick mist everytime I walk by because I stop to admire my plants quite a bit…❤️😊

Hmm, this is a perspective I wasn’t considering. More frequent misting. Thanks for answering and giving me something to consider!

I have misted my plants and I think that if you do it often enough it does help. I have never had a problem with fungus, I keep a fan going almost constantly. Lately tho its been raining here so I just open the window and let the some fresh air and humidity in🙃

Ooh, I almost always have a fan going, too! I never considered that part of the equation. Thanks! PS - I wish it would rain in NYC. We are so dry that the old growth forest across from my home keeps having brush fires!

I have my plants in groups which I think helps with humidity. I care for one group a day to keep it manageable so I just mist whatever group I’m caring for. So they get misted once every four days or so. I don’t know if it helps at all but it hasn’t been harming my plants. And I like to use my pretty mister and watch the mist fall on my plants. It’s a little joy for me so even if it doesn’t do anything for my plants, it does something for me.😊

I really like this reply Anna. Because in a way, if it doesn’t help, I don’t mind so much because I like misting too. It’s peaceful in a way. But I really don’t want to harm my plants. Seems like for you, it hasn’t. Thanks!

Yes! I try to think of my plants as here for me as much as I am here for them.❤️

Hmm, seems like the responses are split. But overall, with the exception of one person who sees a real improvement (sweating leaves) because she mists every day, doesn’t seem to help much. Also, doesn’t seem to harm at all. So I think it’s just what we have the time and energy to do and what we enjoy or want to do. I’m going to give it a bit more thought but leaning towards not misting. Thank you for all of the responses!
