Hi, I purchased this nice Jade a couple weeks ago. It’s tarting to get crusty on a couple leaf tips. My question is about the soil. It seems extremely compacted, to the point that when I touch the surface it feels like one compacted mat. I think I want new soil, maybe a succulent mix? It’s already in Terra Cotta. I’m thinking the same pot is ok for the time being. Opinions?

same pot should be fine! just get as much of the old soil out as you can — soaking it out is effective (and gentle hands) my jades are all currently in fox farm ocean forest with a fair bit of extra perlite, but any fast draining, quick drying mix will do!

I use Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent soil for all my jades. The soil could possibly be becoming hydrophobic, or is simply just old soil and hasn’t been repotted in some time. Completely agree with @eatyacarbs on soaking the soil if it becomes difficult to gently remove the soil from the roots of the jade, and size wise, the pot looks perfectly fine to place the plant back into. As for the crusting on the leaves, is it possible the leaves got wet during watering and the jade was placed in very bright or direct sunlight? If so, it’s possible that’s what scorched the leaves. You can bottom water the jade to prevent getting the leaves wet again. The other possibility is just that it was exposed to bright light after coming from a spot with considerably less light, and got scorched in the process. That just means it might need more of a transition into the brighter location before it completely acclimated to the new spot. Hope this helps!

I’m in MI. The plant shelf has a growlight bar positioned at the back of the shelf, about 11” away from the jade. I have a Spider plantI just moved, but it was close to the jade and I misted it. I did not know they don’t like any water on their leaves. From now on I will put Jade aside when I mist, so not to get her.

water on the leaves is only really a major problem when it’s outdoors — your grow light won’t burn the leaves (but don’t mist it intentionally of course) 😎👍🏻
