Can somebody tell me what is wrong with my plant? It’s a corn plant (or at least that is what I was told) I’ve kept up with the watering and the smaller branch has no leaves :(

I do notice a lottttt of browning on the leaves, do you use tap water?

Tropical plants are very very sensitive to some of the chemicals used in tap water such as chlorine. This causes the cells to burst at the end of the leaves which I see you’ve trimmed off the dead points on some. I would do a flush and fill from the top using distilled water to get all that built up sediment in the soil. Maybe add some fertilizer if you haven’t in a while. You may notice a lot more lush leaves and possibly even more growth on your pruned one!

I do have liquid fertilizer that I add to my tap water when I water it

Adding liquid fertilizer wouldn’t help the plant much if it’s still unfiltered tap water :)

If you can, get a faucet mount filter! It'll save you having to buy gallons of distilled water and if you only use it to water plants, the filters should last quite a while for you. I have a Pur ($20) and get a 6 pack of off brand filters ($25) from Amazon. We use ours for drinking water (us and 4 pets) and watering plants and I'd say we go through a filter every 6-8 weeks, so overall it's not too too expensive and the plants are definitely happier than they were with straight tap water!

Check for overwatering that leads to root rot which shows up as yellow/black leaves and stems.

I usually try to wait watering when the soil looks dry

When it “looks” dry, have you been checking the moisture below the top layer? I usually stick my finger in before I water because sometimes just the top bit is dry and the rest is still wet

You really have to pull off the pot to check for mushy and smelly roots. Remove all the soil and rot if root rot is found. Disinfect with hydrogen peroxide. Move to a smaller pot if needed.

I agree. I had a corn plant that looks exactly like yours and it was root rot. Make sure the soil is dry before watering again. Also depending on the size of your pot, it’s easy to overwater if the pot is too big. Check the roots, if the roots in the smaller stalk are mushy, remove it and downsize to a pot the accommodates the root system of the larger stalk. You may want to change the soil too if it is too moist.
