I did some reading on fungus gnats and saw several posts that said not to use sphagnum moss on your plants. I make up my own tropical soil mix and use sphagnum moss in it. Is sphagnum moss a good additive in making up your own soil medium? TIA. 😊💚🪴

You can use sphagnum moss in a soil mix, but it stays wet for a long time, so make sure to use small pieces of it. For certain plants like anthuriums, I actually put sphagnum moss on the top of their soil to hold in humidity.
2 likesThanks for your return text! So, I can use sphagnum moss in small amounts in my soil mix to help plants hold moisture in??? Is this a good idea for all plants, even those that like to get bone dry? Also, I guess I will put a small amount of moss in with my soil mix. I do have an anthurium, so it sounds like it would be good to put some moss on top of her soil. Does any of this turn on any red lights for you? TIA. Regards, 🤗💚🪴
0 likesMost soil mix don’t have issues holding water. They hold too much water especially when the plant owner waters on a fixed schedule without verifying the plant needs water. Overwatering is a more common issue than under watering from my experience. Slow drying soil adds to the problem. Plants that like their potting mix to quickly dry don’t need moss added in the mix. Cacti and succulents like their soil to quickly dry.
3 likesTXS for your text! I have decided to return my big bar of Sphagnum Moss; I appreciate your helping me make that decision. After reading several posts, I think it’s an additive I can do without in making my own soil. Regards, 🤗💚🪴🤪
0 likesIf you have a decent collection (which it looks like you do), fungus gnats are inevitable. They will show up, you will have to deal with them. I make my soil the way my plants like it and deal with the gnats appropriately. You’re not going to NOT get gnats if you remove the moss from your mixture. But as others have said, moss is very moisture retaining. So only use for plants that need that extra moisture (which many don’t). Lots of soil mixtures will retain enough water.
1 likeYour post was very informative; thanks for taking the time to send it. I’ve been using hydrogen peroxide, 4:1, to ward off fungus gnats, pesky little things! But I’ve heard that BT may be better and I’m thinking of switching to a product like that to do the same thing peroxide does. Any comments regarding BT, or peroxide? TIA. 😊💚🪴
