Hello Plant people (thank you in advance!) My sunflowers have been growing fabulously but they’re now showing their roots in their pots. I’ve already repotted them once when they starting getting bigger but they’re were quite distressed. Do I need to do it again? Should I put more soil in? Thankyou!!!🌞🌻

Do nothing if the plants look healthy. Continuously repotting could lead to root rot from having too much soil holding too much water on the roots. The plants must be able to use all the water in the soil or the roots will rot. Fungus gnats are signs the soil is staying wet too long. Let the soil dry out. Treat with Mosquito Bits or the liquid equivalent, MICROBE-LIFT BMC Biological Mosquito Control. Mix with water per the directions. Also, pay attention to the base of the stem looking blackish. I never noticed the fine roots in the soil. I thought the issue was stem rot before I read the words. 🪴🍀

Sunflowers have very deep tap roots so it’s hard find the right pot for them. They also hate when their roots get disturbed. I tried starting mine in seed trays and transplanted them to the yard but they all fell over when they got tall and had to be staked up. I used a barrel planter for the shorter varieties and direct sow the seeds and it worked well

Dwarf varieties only get 3 feet tall with 10” diameter flower heads, perfect for standard pots. They won’t need deep pots or staking like the original giant variety.
