I thought that the orchid was actually growing but then I went to wipe the leaves and it just popped off but the top has growth And now I’m scared 😭😭 I have killed every single orchid I’ve ever had and I don’t know what to do or how to fix it or if it’s even save-able 😭 Should I repot it? Water more often? Idk

What kind of orchid is this?

I wouldn’t repot it… but you can dig it up and at least look at the roots and see what’s going on that way. I almost killed my orchid but have been able to resurrect it by putting it in water.

I have no clue it’s a generic grocery store one. And I got it as the person was throwing it away many months ago- She keeps them for like a month and then throws them away 🤦 So I’m surprised it’s survived this long . I repotted it in about march into a coco coir and orchid bark mixture and have been watering it about every 2-3 weeks give or take

I would recommend making sure that the pot has plenty of drainage holes, if it doesn't the roots will definitely rot. Also orchids require bright indirect light. I have mine under grow lights! 😊🌸

It looks like it's making a keiki! You could probably propagate that in water or moss and have a new baby orchid. I have recently become interested in orchids so I don't know much yet, but I do know specialized orchid pots tend to be clear and have tons of air holes so maybe it's time to get one or two of those. I understand your pain at seeing orchids treated as disposable decorations. I hope you can grow your little keiki into a happy orchid! Good luck!

There’s tons online about where to cut and how to pot. Says you shouldn’t separate them until the baby grows its own roots.

Leaf that fell off: that tiny leaf is viable. Put both in a high humidity situation (no substrate) and hope for roots. keiki: the keiki is not ready for removal. Ideally, you want at least two or three roots that are 2-3 inches long before you take it off. Because the crown leaves fell off, you have almost no chance of getting new leaves on the main plant. Find something long and narrow to plant it in (a window box maybe?) And fill that with a mix of orchid bark and sphagnum. Put rooting hormone on the stem nodes (including the base of the keiki). Water the substrate in the box and then lay the entire stem flat on top. If there are roots in the pot, check and treat for root rot if needed. Remove any dead roots. Leave the roots exposed above the substrate. Make sure the keiki and main root mass get plenty of light (orchid roots can photosynthesize)

Your odds of the plant surviving are kinda low but that'll give you your best chance. If it dies, it's no big deal, just start over with a new orchid. Also never get water in the crown (where all the leaves meet)

I thought I was avoiding making the crown wet but I guess not very well 🥲
