I was gifted this bonsai tree. Some of his leaves are turning like a yellowish colour and near the stem they’re turning a bit brown. He also seems dry and we’ve upped the watering schedule, but I’m unsure if I’m doing something wrong. Any tips would help!

What kind of tree is it? (Bonsai is a way of growing a tree into a miniature state not a species of plant). Identify the type of plant will allow for much better recommendations. I’m guessing it is a Chinese Juniper or Red Cedar but if you can find out you will have much better success in diagnosing its conditions.

It looks like it definitely needs to be re-shaped. Removing any dead or dying foliage will allow the plant to focus on its healthy parts. Yellowing juniper foliage could be that the soil is nutrient deficient which can happen with bonsai as they start as large plants and are pruned into a miniature which means they use a lot of nutrients. Junipers also yellow if there are fungus or watering issues. Since you said it was dry I am assuming the latter. Plants grown as bonsai do require quite of bit of attention because pots are shallow and soil (and therefore nutrients) are more scarce that traditional potting methods. If I were you, I would contact a local bonsai club to find out the best ways to care for your new acquisition.
