What is my air plant (ricky) growing?
His runway accessories for the met gala! … I mean definitely a happy little (or big) flower. Which is exactly what he’s supposed to do! Which also means you are doing a great job since Ricky is a flowering air plant (tillisandia bulbosa) (sp?)
2 Mi piaceIt looks like your airplant is setting out its flower spike. Typically this means it’s going to die “soon”. It will start producing pups at the base of the plant and eventually the flower spike will die, then once the pups mature, the main plant typically begins to decline as it’s done with its job. You look like you have a caput medusae here which is what my personal first airplant was.
2 Mi piaceMine flowered almost 3 years ago (it still has the flower, not colorful, but not dead either, so haven't removed it) and it's working on pup number 5. I separate the pups off after they get about 1/4 of the main plant, not sure if that helps to keep the main one alive, but it's doing good.
1 mi piaceIf you keep caring for the mother plant well enough, the bloom can last for around a decade and the plant another decade past, wild ones die off much sooner because they just don’t have consistent care. I think the “best” time to remove the pups is when they’re approximately 2/3rds the size of the mother plant but given how big my Juncea is, that would mean I have to handle a 3’ wide ball of plant for several years
0 Mi piacea flower! they are technically monocarpic (one bloom, lots of babies, and then they die) but their blooms can last years with adequate care.
