Hi all! My mum bought me this bird of paradise from a local market today, I have never owned one of these so if anyone has any care tips please let me know! The soil was saturated and was so compact it was like concrete. It was extremely root bound and had a bit of root rot. I gave it a good clean and a repot (I usually like to leave them a few weeks before repotting but it needed to be done) I was just curious if the colour of one of the lower leaves and the reddish colour down the bottom of the plant is normal or is it something I should be concerned about? Thank you in advance!

Hi there, that colour could be an indicator of what was happening with the roots. Monitor it but you may need to cut it off at some point. I like the monstera grow light you have - this plant needs much more light than a monstera. It grows in full sun outside so really would benefit from a similar grow light of its own. Lovely plant zone you have :) Best of luck!

Thank you! I have another light just like the one above my monstera, I’m thinking of doing the same light set up in my bedroom for the bird of paradise. :)

Yes! That’s the right move for sure!

Cute! I just know these things love the sun. From looking I’d prob trim the brown leaf and after a week or two repot into something bigger? Or did the root fit ok in that pot? It’s so pretty

Thank you! I ended up taking the leaf off :) The root ball was actually a lot smaller than I expected, I repotted into a smaller pot because there was so much saturated soil. It seems to be doing okay, fingers crossed ☺️

I agree that veining on the leaf, maybe from the rot. You may want to clip it. The curling light brown edges on the petiole sides look normal
