Self-watering planters: do y’all ever worry about overwatering? I got some new types of self-watering planters and they are super cute…but the soils seems to always be wet. Their string is thicker than the other one I have. So my plants are doing well…but…Is it possible to overwater using self-watering pots?

I have never had luck with those and you are correct they do seem to hold water.

My understanding is that they are only suited for certain plants. Plants that like consistently moist soil, like a Boston Fern.

Yep, they would be death for a succulent or cactus

What plants are they suited for? Thanks

I’ve had mixed results but have been experimenting. I have mostly aroids so it seems in my experience that if I’m using a self watering planter I use LECA instead of my regular chunky mix.

I take out the string and keep the bottom as a drainage plate. That way you can still have the pot just not a self watering

You can overwater with them so some of mine I will intentionally let dry out a little more than it should every so often (e.g. spider plant and pothos) I will also give it a good top water every once in awhile too.

I tried them when I first started collecting plants about six years ago. I learned to hate them very quickly and I refuse to use them. They're usually plastic and plastic doesn't breathe like terra cotta for example.
