This is my Alternanthera Ficoidea (Party Time) plant. Aren’t they supposed to be bushy not tall? I have tried chopping and propping it (hence the two pieces) but it just keeps growing tall and leggy. Am I just mistaken that it grows up first and then out? It’s one of my favorite plants so I’m nervous I’m not doing something right.

Just a theory, but maybe it doesn’t have enough chlorophyll to get the energy to be branching out into two branches by each cut? It’s got a lot of pink, so it might be focusing on etiolation instead of branching. Do you fertilize it? What window is it in? Mine are in a north facing window so they only get late afternoon direct sun for an hour or so, though they are branching into two, but they are a lot more green than yours. Though, they etiolate a lot because of the lack of light, so there’s quite a lot of spacing between each node on mine. Kind of looks the same on yours. Try putting them in a brighter spot if you can. ☺️

The two branches aren’t attached to each other! I propagated a cut a while back and just repotted them together since neither were very big. It could be the chlorophyll. It was super pink when I got it and all the leaves since then have also remained pink. It’s near a north east facing window so it gets direct sun in the morning and then indirect sunlight for the rest of the day. I do fertilize it whenever planta tells me to! I may try moving it to my livingroom windows. I’m having to rearrange all my plants now that it’s getting cold because I don’t have central heat. Just a fireplace in the main room so it gets very cold in my house which they don’t appreciate

I thought it looked like you have cut it above the first node and that it didn’t branch out from the cut with more than one stem. In my experience they are much more likely to branch if you prune them, so try cutting it above the first node if it’s well rooted. It should branch into two with enough light. 😉
