Can anyone tell me what type of cactus this is? My son bought it when it was only 2 inches tall and it had a flower on it. It blooms little flowers every year for about a day and then the blooms fade away. It has got so tall and heavy that it will not stand up on its own now. I know I need to repot it? Not sure if I should repot it in a container that is long and let it lay on rocks, or just in a container like it is in now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Short-spined golden barrel cactus. that soil looks very dense, cactuses prefer sandy and airy soil. you can probably find aroid soil at the same place you got the cactus 🤷‍♂️ and it's so long because it's not getting enough light. they need 6-8 hours of unfiltered sun. i don't think it's possible to make it stand anymore, i'd just cut it where it starts to bend. the bit that's cut off can be propagated. if possible, i would put it on a porch or patio, but a south facing window is also okay.

Thank you, I know it’s not in the right soil, it has never been. I was wondering if you could cut in it half. That’s great to hear. It does get about 6 hours of light a day. Do you think it’s too close to the window?

the proximity to the window isn't the problem, it's the direction that the window faces. an east or west window will catch sunrise or sunset, which is considered part sun, but a south window is always facing the sun, which is what your cactus wants. north windows almost never face the sun at any point in the day.

I’ve never really had south windows, but I am familiar with unobstructed west-facing ones and my cacti absolutely thrived in them!

This is how my cactus blooms and it also has pink flowers.

I re- potted mine and now it’s somewhat standing on its own. First time it’s flowered for over 3 weeks. The flowers usually would come out and fade the next day.

I don’t know what it is but I love how the frog is supporting the end of the cactus.
