Home Depot vs Lowe’s (Updated Aug 26, 2026 See bottom of this post.) OK. Everyone has a Home Depot or Lowe’s in their neighborhood in someway. I myself get on a bus to go to either store that are city blocks, or two miles, from where I live. And just try getting on a bus after being at a Home Depot or Lowe’s making all your purchases. The general public is not kind to those with a lot of, or large, items. Recently well at Home Depot I walked through their entire plant section, indoors and outdoors. After I was done assessing the health of the plants at Home Depot. I stopped to talk to two people who work in the garden center about the following: Me: Hello I need to ask you a question. So big box stores, two siblings, one called Home Depot & one called Lowe’s. Why is it that Lowe’s will attempt to offer dying plans to the general public at a discounted price, but Home Depot would rather have all of the dead items just hanging out and not offer any discount for those items that are so sickly looking? Them: Home Depot rent out the space to the plant manufacturers. Those manufacturers do not allow us to discount their items because just because we think they look like they’re dead. Them: The manufacturers care for, set the prices, and tell us if something’s going to be on sale. And they take away their dying or dead plants. At Lowe’s they decide “These are the plants we have on site. These are the plants that are dying. Let’s at least try to get them sold at some discounted price.” I am not saying that one company’s set of plants is better than the other company. I am saying Lowe’s at least allows people with limited budgets to acquire, sickly plants and take the chance that they can revive or grow the plant. I personally have bought more plants at Lowe’s that were dying or looked dead, and resurrected, then I have bought at Home Depot on sale. I personally prefer to always buy my plants at Lowe’s. The little guy shown here is a great example. I bought it for two dollars and two people that saw me pick it up, said to me that’s dead. I told him I really liked the pot and so if the thing died, then you know, at least I’d have the pretty pot. Lo and behold my resurrected Jade succulent! Thank you Lowe’s for supporting us poor people by having your discount plant carts! UPDATE AUGUST 27, 2026: I need to apologize to Home Depot because yesterday I was in a Home Depot where every plant was cared for. There are two Home Depot’s that are near me. One is almost 2 miles away and one is 4 miles away. (Yes they are probably 6 miles apart from each other.). The Garden Center that is 2 miles away from me is a dump compared to the store 4 miles away from me. The Garden Center that is 4 miles away from me had everything and more than the 2 mile store plus discounted items. (New picture added.) At the 4 miles away Home Depot store, on Wednesday Aug, 26, 2026, I found and purchased the Monstera in the water jar for 50% off. It was marked as $19.98 so it was $9.99 before sales tax. Even if the plant passes away due to my errors, the jar with cork can be reused and so for $9.99 the Home Depot purchase was 1000% worth it. Home Depot I apologize. Your stuff and sales do exist, we just gotta look for them in multiple stores which is no different than going to different Lowe’s stores.
