Hi, it’s my first time ever gardening and I have this plant that is supposed to be a zinnia. I’m not sure how to care for it. I stick my finger in the soils to feel if it needs water or not but besides that I keep it in the sun for the most part

The big zinnias, like what I think you have, will grow tall unless kept in check. I suggest pinching back almost halfway down, at a set of leaves. This will help with blooms rather than her focusing on height. I would also get some sort of support rod. Zinnias love sun and water when the top 1” is dry. They are fast growers, reseeds themselves, and make some beautiful floral arrangements.

What do you mean when you say pinching back at the leaves

Would they be ok if I leave them in that pot, or should I plant it on the ground ?

It’s the process where you “pinch” where you want to stop the growing and revert energy elsewhere. You just pinch with your thumb and index finger 😊 But with that size, it’ll be easier to just get a pair of clean garden shears and gently snip right above a set of leaves. I would repot in a bigger pot or plant in the ground. Me personally, my giant zinnias and other big zinnia types are in the ground. If I don’t know what kind of zinnia it is, it starts in a pot until I get an idea of its size.

If you have a nice slender vase, i would cut the flower right above a set of leaves. Cut to have a nice long stem. I kept my vase full all summer last year and hope to do the same this year. Your plant is long enough to get a nice long stem. It also helps the plant branch out, and the flower inside makes a happy space.
