So I now it's still summer where l live and I have a few questions. 1) since summers almost over, and I want to change all my plants location to winter mode. I have a shelf I want to put most of them on. But it is lower light and was wondering if I should slowly move my plants away from the biggest light source. Or is that even necessary? 2) how do you get a Venus Fly Trap ready for winter? I've heard of freezing them in the fall. How long do you freeze them? When is the best time in fall?

I’ve never transferred my plants for winter wear. I do happen to use my grow lights more often and longer during winter. But I don’t transition them from where they are as they are acclimated already. Just as if they were outside growing… they know what to do with weather change for themselves as they never move outside. Now, if there is something I don’t know about this process I’d like to learn also. This is just me and what I do and my thoughts. I haven’t used fly traps but have thought about getting some.

I was just wondering this because I have to move my big plant stand for the winter because it is too close to my window and my window is not very insulated so it gets pretty cold near the window and I don’t want my plants to freeze.

Ahh ok I could see why on this. My state WA gets cold and rainy mostly but I think the heaters counter our cold. I have two large ones by a window but they are also near heater so I think it counters it getting too cold.

Thanks! I think I’ll just move the plant stand a little bit away from the window, just to be safe.

I don’t think freezing a Venus is wise. Better to create/buy a lil terrarium and just stick em in there for the winter, pot and all, on a bed of moss. I’ve been researching flexible plastic boxing materials at Michael’s, hoping to find one big enough to sport my 12” long double Venus windowbox planter (larger glass terrariums are expensive!). So far no luck but I’m gonna hit Google as well; lots of good advice there on flytraps anyway. Any terrarium should have vent holes and be placed in indirect sun. Or so I’ve read. I’m in TX so our winters are short; do research based on where you live. Just don’t use Planta’s advice for them.

Thank you! But what will a terrarium do for the plant? Keep it warm? I drew a picture of what it would look like based on your comment. The blue is the moss and red is the terrarium and green is the VFT in a pot. Is that right?

Yes! That works! It is to keep them warm and moist and out of any drafts. Also, rule one: use filtered water ONLY and never fertilize them. Here are mine, outdoors for the summer.
