i have been a heavily invested, super proud plant lady for the past 2+ years. I have under 30 plants & am slowly continuing to build a collection of my favorites. For some reason, alocasias make me nervous. I’d love to have one someday but aren’t they super picky and pest-prone? I would appreciate any tips and tricks or insight about how you all seem to have the prettiest alocasias

In my experience alocasias are pretty easy care, as long as you get two things right: 1, consistent soil moisture. I use a self-watering pot for that. 2, be gentle if you need to move or repot it; alos shock fairly easily (if they throw a tantrum, don't panic. Keep doing regular care; they'll probably only drop one or two leaves.) Other than that, watch how long the leaf stems grow to adjust light levels. If the leaves do weird colors (aside from shocking after moving the plant, and not just an old leaf dying off), then check your water for chemical issues

okay so they’re dramatic- noted lol leaf drops are for sure something i’d have to get used to. but are they crazy pest prone? i had a calathia & after like 10 months of thriving it was totally covered in spider mites. i also had a bad experience with a majesty palm. i really dont like bringing in plants that are magnets for misfortune

So far the only pest I've gotten was a single mealybug. I apparently caught it before it could lay eggs, because it was just one and done for treatment

Mine haven’t gotten any pests so far. I was exactly the same as you and finally dipped my toes in about a year ago. They aren’t as dramatic as I heard. I think the big thing is they lose leaves often when pushing a new one and they go dormant losing most if not all leaves. Both are healthy situations and that took some getting used to. Take the plunge! They truly are a joy!💚💚

They are known as pest-collectors because a lot of people struggle with giving them the right environment. An unhealthy plant is bound to get pests. They are the same level likely to get pests as any other plant
