Hi everyone. Completely new here & just set up all my locations. I have two ‘dark’ rooms, Any suggestions of anything that might cope? Thanks in advance.

You know what’s funny? My snake plant is in a fairly bright room but in a dark corner and she’s doing great! But Planta says she’s placed too dark! I was surprised because I thought they didn’t need much light.

Planta is a little too general with its lighting requirements in my opinion. Plus there's a difference where plants can survive vs thrive. There's more than just direct, partial, and shade in lighting. One of my few issues with Planta

You could get grow light for them

No plant can grow in darkness. Even low light tolerant plants like ZZ plants need to receive at least 100-200 foot candles to grow which dark rooms can’t provide. I’d recommend using grow lights.

My snake plants or my ZZ did not survive in low light conditions. People say they can but they don’t do well. Very slow growth and very susceptible to being overwatered. I would also recommend grow lights 😇

Ferns, ficus, some terrestrial orchids, any plant that would be in deep shade forest undergrowth in the wild

These would have the best chance but bear in mind that even in deeply shaded forest undergrowth, those plants are still receiving far more light than they would in a dark room. A leaf completely in the “dark shade” under a tree could still easily be receiving 150-300 PPFD, which is what I keep my grow lights at for “low” light plants like velvet anthuriums.

I’ve been putting cuttings of an old philodendron brasil in dark corners for years 😆 the leaves are never very big, but the variegation is still present and it’s sooo easy! This corner gets scant light from a north facing window 5 ft away and a medium-sized south facing window 20 ft away. Good luck and have fun experimenting!

This sound very similar to my rooms. Thanks so much. I’ll give it a go.

I’m not sure how I feel about the aesthetic of grow lights. I’ll see how I get on. Thank you though.

Completely relate to this sentiment. I’d recommend Soltech. Their lights look like actual decor. You could also buy a simple grow bulb and put it in a regular lamp or mount grow strips under bookshelves. I did these things for many years because I’m also more focused on interior design.

I like to buy grow bulbs and then put them in cute lamps so it looks normal! I second the recommendation for Soltech if you can spring for them; they’re pricey but definitely high quality and worth it.
