First plant I’m excited about after watching the Addams Family’s “Cleopatra” being fed cheeseburgers in my childhood LoL. In a serious note, I want to ensure I am doing the right thing. It has been acclimating for 2 days in a windowsill without a grow light (for now until it arrives). I plan to feed her with freeze dried mealworms (rehydrating with distilled water droplets). However, i feel guilty being too squirmy with dead flies and tweezers. Should i let nature do its thing with flies landing on it?

    Hi! I had VFTs. Quite a lot of them. They need a lot of humidity. Crazy amount of humidity and crazy amount of light. I kept mine in a glass greenhouse, inside a tray with distilled water, under grow lights. Every day I would check that the distilled water didn’t run out and that the humidity wasn’t condensing. The chances that a bug will lie on them are low if you live in a dry weather. I was feeding them drops of liquid fertilizer in the sides of the mouths making sure I wouldn’t trigger the trap. They lose a lot of energy to trigger the traps. That way my VFTs thrived. Important things: - high humidity - 12-14 hours of light - distilled water, if not they lose the feeding trigger and also die prematurely - nutrients enter through the traps: either bugs or fertilizer.

    You can feed them small live or freeze dried rehydrated insects once or twice a month. I just did a little bit of research. I don’t have one. YET. I live in Saskatoon SK and they don’t seem to sell them at normal plant stores and grocery stores anymore. They used to at Walmart but that was over 4 years ago or something. But from what I also remember, they don’t really eat that much. They have a fly once in awhile and spend most of the time digesting it before they open back up again. Also try not to touch the flytrap traps because once they close with nothing in them they take around 24-48 hours to open back up again. And it takes a lot of energy for the plant to open back up or close which is why they take so long. I hope this was helpful somewhat! Could probably get a bunch of crickets or ants etc from outside, put them in a little terrarium and just feed your flytrap every once in awhile.

    I’ve been wanting to try one of these again. I haven’t had success in the past. Boy would love living here! Palm Springs must be the fruit fly capital of the world!
