So, i am a bit of a newbie to properly caring for my house plants. I need to fertilize soon. Should I be using different fertilizer based on the type of plant? What about plants that have been recently repotted? I am seeing a task to fertilize, but am a little nervous about it. Any advice?

I’m mostly a newbie too, and I’ve just started trying different types of fertilizer for categories of plants. So, I’ve got a general one for foliage plants, one for succulents, an orchid mix, and a fertilizer for fruits and veggies for my outdoor plants. I don’t know if it will make a difference, but I figure it’s worth a shot. Happy growing! 🪴

I use fertilizer sticks a lot if I’m worried about getting fertilizer on the leaves or roots; I follow the instructions on the back of the pack. I use Miracle Grow single packets which I mix with gal water-super easy, already measured-for everything else. I rely on Planta to tell me when. So far, so good.

Honestly you can get really specific with the type of fertilizer and the type of plant but a good general rule is finding one is having equal or close to equal ratio of what’s in the fertilizer. I have a liquid concentrate that I add to water for my plants. It has a 6-4-4 ratio. From Fox Farm. If you have more flowering plants you can get a plant food that is specific to flowering or tailor to what you need. Hopefully that helps!

So, here is how much of a newbie I am. I had to google 6-4-4 ratio. I had no idea what that meant! 😄 No wonder my kids always called my houseplants “victims”. Really trying to do better with my green babies.

The easiest/laziest fertilizer is a liquid or they have sticks you can put/replace in the soil too!

A few tips: - If you use a commercial soil (like miracle gro) then there’s already fertilizer in there. Usually no need to fertilize for the first 6-9 months after repotting. - if you’re fertilizing with watering, start with half the strength recommended. Full strength is too much for a lot of houseplants. - if you use something more concentrated, like granules/drops/pre-mixed solution, put around the perimeter of the pot and not next to the stem - just generally avoid getting fertilizer on stem/leaves. If you’re worried about it, consider bottom watering with fertilizer

Those are great pro tips to add to Planta instruction for fertilizing and repotting. I didn’t even think about the soil being fertilized.
