Hi everyone, My monsterra is getting bigger and I thought of repotting it and separated some of it to a new pot but would like to know all of your suggestions. If it's better to leave it as it is, get a bigger pot and add another pole for support ? Thank you 😊

Lovely plant! I always think: what’s my goal? Do you want more monsteras around?! Exciting. Then go ahead and propagate. Where you have circled is a good node to cut, callus, and water prop. There’s several places that have good nodes to cut. Then I would suggest repotting in a slightly bigger pot (not much!)

I pretty much agree w/ Show Me the Greens. If you want more monstera pots then take that baby out and separate or else chop and prop. If you just want more growth on your monstera, it doesn’t need repotting yet. As a general guideline, try to repot monstera when roots are taking up ~85-90% of the pot. Monstera grow MUCH bigger and faster when they’re pot-bound and it doesn’t look like you’re there yet. If your goal is bigger leaves or a fuller plant then there are a few questions to ask yourself: - are the leaves getting smaller instead of bigger? - is it hard to keep up with watering because it dries out so quickly? - am I seeing a growth slow-down *despite* really good conditions? (If growth slows down seasonally or with a temp drop, for example, that’s not a reason to repot) If no, keep it in the same pot. I spent so long repotting my monstera because the pot seemed full, because roots were growing pretty extensively from the bottom, etc. And I didn’t understand why these plants in fantastic conditions weren’t giving me new/bigger leaves nearly as fast as others reported. Once I backed off repotting I started getting huge increases in leaf size and much faster growth, and it’s really changed how I approach monstera.

Oh, one more thing: looks like you have a climbing support in the pole. Right now you’ve got Velcro tape attaching a few petioles to the support, which can actually decrease growth by limiting their capacity to optimize light exposure. I’d 100% recommend taking the Velcro tape off the petioles because you only ever want to attach the main stem (the part from which everything else sprouts) to the pole. If anything, looking at this setup, I’d probably recommend taking your monstera(s) out of this pot, moving the support pole so it’s right behind the stem, and replacing this soil mix with something chunkier so the roots get more oxygen in the exact same pot. You can see 25-50% faster growth this way (depending on the other conditions) and you’re at much lower risk of things like root rot.

Hi K, Thank you very much for the suggestions! I don't really want another pot of monstera, I thought about separating it because I was bothered by how messy it looks 😅 She has been growing 3 large leaves over this summer, I think she looks pretty healthy and following ur suggestion I have removed the velcro. Maybe I will do just that. Moving the pole. Or does this plant needs more than 1 pole? Chunkier mix like mixing orchid bark ? Or something else? I currently use regular potting mix from pro-mix and i add half perlite. Thanks again!

Hi CG- I’m thinking a pole behind the section you have circled. I also just learned that it’s important to put the pole BEHIND the stem. Hmm I love to mix my own soil using regular potting mix + orchid bark. I couldn’t tell you the percentage (maybe 3:1?)

Hey show me the greens, thanks for replying ! So where should I move the pole? I'm clueless honestly! I just put the pole wherever last year.. And they look all over the place, but I was to afraid to destroy it so I didn't touch the roots too much, put the pole, added more soil and voila 😂 And what do I have to do with this aerial roots? Can it climb on the pole?

The nursery pot that it’s in right now looks a little small. I think you were going to repot? Just wanted to make sure. Not a huge jump; that terracotta looks nice! I would recommend training those beautiful, long roots into the new soil. I see two areas that need poles

The roots can climb the pole; I’ve never experimented with that. Maybe check out a YouTube?

The best YouTube for this is called Kill This Plant. He has a video dedicated to where you should put the support, so that’s a great option.

Thanks! I will get a bigger pot and fix this pole on the right position!
