Hello! I’m new to gardening and plants as a whole, I began in June of this year and since then I’ve gotten a Jade Tree, Bunny Ear Cactus, Tineke Rubber Plant, and then most recently a Monstera. But anyways, I just wanted to know if anyone has any tips for caring for a Monstera and how to manage it? She hasn’t exactly made the best impression on my family with how big she already is lol Her name is Lani and I made a cutting to propagate her :) (The cutting had two mature fenestrated leaves on it)

for the cutting, i’ve had great luck propagating in water :) just put it in a transparent glass in a sunny window and change out the water once a week. for the mother plant, be careful not to water too often. i am in the process of rehabilitating mine from root rot. if you repot it, don’t put it in a pot larger than 2 inches of the original pot. this will store too much water and keep the soil soggy for too long. hope this helps! :D

Thank you! Is there a specific length the roots should be before I put her in a pot? I decided to water propagate, also the cutting has a small aerial root growing from it so should I leave the aerial root alone and plant it with the cutting when the cutting roots?

you should be good to transfer to soil once the roots are about 2” long! I know aerial roots can grow under soil, but i am not sure about water. I would assume so, but i could be wrong. no need to remove it unless it bothers you, it won’t affect the plant.

Give it a moss pole! They’re climbers, and it will rapidly grow. It also helps the plant grow up, rather than hunched over. Put it along the back of the plant, and only secure the very base to the pole, never the stems! Aerial roots will grow into your moss pole and make your plant happy and eager to climb. Also, water only when dry. Make sure you have a nice chunky well draining soil. Every monstera I’ve purchased from a big box store, usually has several plants in one pot. Check out and see how many you have, some people like to separate, others keep them together for a full bushy look. Totally up to the owner. Enjoy!

Sorry, apparently I don’t get notifications from Planta. Any garden store, but amazon is probably cheaper! I buy the 10 packs of thiccly brand poles for $30. Moss brick is about $5 and expands wayyy more than you’d expect!

lol my family thinks I’m crazy, to be fair I have collected like 30 in about 7 months… I just got a monstera too! From Home Depot with 8 plants so I seperated them, added stakes to the largest plants, and treated for pests. They like well draining soil. For the stakes im trying various peices of wood and bark planted into their pots. They appreciate a humidifier near them, but not so it will dampen the soil! Eventually when you get air roots, guiding them down into the soil will increase Lani’s stability when she gets massive (they grow in trees in the wild and drop their roots down into the ground or anchoring to trees) Im giving 5 away to friends and family, keeping my favourite 3!

Thank you! I got my monstera from Home Depot too! I haven’t taken her out of her pot yet because she’s so big compared to my other plants and I don’t wanna mishandle her. She has about 7 or 8 aerial roots right now but they were already grown into the soil but idk if it’s just because she wants more space or they’re just growing to anchor her. From trying to put skewers into her pot to check moisture, her roots also seem pretty compact because I keep hitting different roots about 2-6 inches down in a different spots. What do you think?

From the size of those leaves, I’d say it might be rootbound. Honestly it seems pretty happy. check if there are any roots coming out the bottom, or if you notice any coming out of the surface of the pot. If so, you might want to upsize it a bit. Up to you though, monsteras take being root bound surprisingly well but i like to upsize my plants a bit before it gets to harming the plant
