Odd question, but does anyone know anything about dogs and plant allergies? My little girl has very severe allergies. They're so bad that I put puppy pads down in the house and don't even let her out if the pollen level is high. I have air conditioners on constantly, three air purifiers and two humidifiers. Even with her allergy meds she's still all snotty. Someone suggested maybe my house plants. I have quite a few but most are in the succulent family. Have any of you had a problem with this? I don't want to be giving away any plants unless I'm sure. TIA

I doubt houseplants would make a difference since pollen is from flowers, not plant leaves, and the pollen is what most people are allergic to. Btw just wanted to mention that I used to have such bad allergies that I couldn’t even breathe out of my nose, then I got allergy shots for a couple of years. My allergies started improving after 4-6 months. Now I barely have any allergic reactions at all!

I had shots too and it helped mine immensely but she's 16 so it's really not an option right now.

My daughters allergies seemed to improve slightly after we started keeping houseplants around.

For your dog to have an allergic reaction she’d have to be coming into contact with some form of the plant tissue. The most common type is pollen (grass and tree especially), which can travel long distances through the air. If your plants aren’t flowering then they’re not releasing pollen, so she’d have to be rubbing against or eating the plants to give significant exposure. Tl;dr: probably not the houseplants. I’d ask your vet for options. Dogs can often take antihistamines like humans, but you’ll want to be sure you’re choosing the right one with the right dose. They also have veterinary allergy meds that act more directly to block the immune response to allergens, so those may be an option as well.

She's 16 and she's been on antihistamines twice a day for about two years since she had a really bad sinus infection and for some reason that just made everything worse.

Aw, that’s frustrating. My 18 year old cat has chronic rhinitis, which I guess is a fancy name for never-ending sinus cold. She gets on-going antibiotics for it. I don’t like the idea of antibiotics as an indefinite treatment, but it does keep her nose clear for breathing. I can’t argue with my cat being able to breathe lol, and the vet knows better than little old me Maybe you could ask your vet about chronic rhinitis if your dog isn’t responding to antihistamines. But I understand that it’s hard to do the frequent vet visits as our fur babies get that old. Some vets will just keep offering tests and pills and surgeries and all that. And it makes me feel bad for trying to accept that my pet isn’t a spring chicken anymore and hasn’t been for a long time. Sometimes it’s easier on their bodies to not try every possible thing, as long as they aren’t in pain and have a decent quality of life for a senior Anyways, I kind of lost the plot lol. It seems unlikely to me that the houseplants are the culprit if they’re not flowering

not a dog (obviously) but my seasonal allergies were awful even with allergy meds/limiting contact just because of the area i lived in. the allergens get into the house regardless of the exposure. i would definitely talk to your vet about it. idk if they can do allergy panels for dogs like they can for humans, but if they can that will help narrow down what she’s actually sensitive to. animals have different biological systems than us, so i ALWAYS default to “ask a vet” since they are the experts with all the information. best of luck!!

Seems she's allergic to everything alive outside. That's probably a bit of an exaggeration but not much. I have the house totally closed up and have air purifiers going but I also have another dog who does go outside so she's probably bringing tons of stuff in. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't contributing to it.

well it sounds like you’re doing everything you can for her and i’m sure she appreciates it :) allergies are hard in general for anyone, but being an old pup can’t make it any easier. but if it helps, i don’t think the plants are hurting her. it may just be one of those tough situations where her allergies are the worst and not much can be done except helping her be as comfortable as possible, which it sounds like you are already doing a great job of!

I didn’t start taking allergy shots till I was fifteen so not sure why they are not an option for her. I didn’t start having severe allergies until a couple of years before that. I was like her basically allergic to everything! Even some foods. I was told to eat fresh foods not canned as they contain preservatives causing issues too. Frozen is best if not fresh. Have you changed any laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, foods, or soaps? Does she drink a lot of milk or have a lot of milk products? These make me extremely congested. Are the plants harboring dust or mold? These are two main issues for me. Wasn’t allergic to animals but what they had on them if they went outside. Actually went into anaphylactic shock multiple times before I had shots. I had to go twice a week and get shots in each arm. My severe allergies have lessened extremely and haven’t had a severe reaction in years thank goodness. Has she been to an allergist and has she had testing. I’m sure she has just wondered. Maybe need to seek a different opinion. Good luck and hope this helped allergies are no joke and can be miserable!

16 in dog years is pretty old. She also has a couple of health conditions so it would take too long for the immunity to build up and I don't want to put her through that. She has a very strict diet. Raw food with no grains, so I don't think it's that. None of my plants have mold but this house that I live in is extremely dusty even closed up with air purifiers going. I just wanted to make sure that my house plants weren't making the poor little things allergies worse. Been searching for answers for years. Even spending money on one of those hair strand tests and it was a joke. We recently tried Claritin instead of Zyrtec or Benadryl and ended up rushing her to the emergency vet with nasal hemorrhaging. She's back on the Benadryl and thank God that stopped. But from what everybody says at least it doesn't sound like I need to start gifting my plants.
