Need help with my philodendron mayoi..looking at pic seems to be thriving, lots of new growth, however the underside of the leaves are discolored, as if they are wet (to the touch they are not) .. normal behavior or am I doing something wrong?? No visible pests.

I’ve had this happen to a few plants too. Have you sprayed anything in the leaves by chance?

When I first got it on April 14th, I used a leaf cleaner but nothing since. I normally shine plants leaves when I first get a plant to remove the water spots etc from the grower, but only the one time.

Seems like melting.. I have experienced this when light and humidity are too high for certain philos though more so on cream or lighter green colored leaves. I have remedied this with making sure there is enough air circulation, watering less and pulled back some from direct light. What’s your thought?

Looks like edema caused when the plant can’t get rid of water fast enough using the normal transpiration process. It looks translucent on philodendrons especially when seen from the back. It can also show tiny bumps and scars. Several things or a combination of all of them can cause edema: - Watering too often - Poor drainage - Too little light slowing the photosynthesis process that send excess water vapor out through the pores (transpiration) - Too high humidity that slows or stops both the evaporation and transpiration processes - Poor air flow that slows evaporation of water from the soil

So, as big as that plant was, it was in a 3in pot. When I cracked her open it was practically solid roots, I transplanted to a 5in pot with very chunky soil. As for circulation, it sits at a high traffic area so just me schlepping back and forth is the only air movement. Light from a west and sw window but right under a grow light. I will change up the location and see what happens.. especially now that there’s room for her to grow

Wow! So, the roots became a water bowl holding water and probably blocking drainage. You can try keeping her in the same place after the repot if the primary cause is a root bound condition.

It’s also been pretty humid.. I haven’t even been running my humidifiers because it was close to 60% naturally. You may be on to something! Thx
