I was wondering if anyone knew what this is. There seems to be some kind of mold or fuzz growing on the outside of my pot🧐

i’ve had this happen to mine. i’ve noticed it happens when i use too dense of a soil and it becomes waterlogged. try repotting with a more airy, chunky soil. if that’s a pothos, the plant will appreciate the chunky soil too :)

Ahh gotcha thank you! Should I get rid of this pot? Or am I ok to just clean it up and re-use?

you can reuse the pot. just scrub it really well and use dish soap to clean it. i like to soak mine in the sink for like 5/10 mins after. you can use a dash of bleach in there too. just let the pot dry before using it again.

you can also spray it with hydrogen peroxide. the mold wont harm the plant, but it can be harmful to humans if we breathe in the spores.

My view on white mold on terracotta pots is that it’s normal and not harmful. I actually have all my African violets in these pots and they all have this in them and for some weird reason I like the look. It’s kind of a vintage farm housey vibe for me. But if you don’t, I’d pitch the pot and buy a glazed ceramic pot. I like to put all my plants ; except my violets) in clear plastic pot so I can see the roots, and I put those down into ceramic cache pots. Those are pots without holes that act as a saucer to catch the water. Just make sure you don’t let your plants sit in water. TIP: My favorite small cache pots in the photo I buy by the case from Walmart for about $4.48 each. They fit 4ā€ nursery pots perfectly and they have a plugged hole so they are dual purpose.

Stonedfruuit is right though. If you’re allergic to mold you might not want to use terracotta pots at all. You cannot keep mold off them. You can try but it’s a constant battle.

This isn’t mould. Terracotta pots are porous and actually breathe. It allows the natural salts and minerals from our water, to seep through to the outside causing a white powdery build up on the outsides of the pot

agree. and you don’t need to repot. just aerate the soil with a skewer by making a few holes. otherwise, you can use distilled water or a purifier.
