Croton needs at least 6 hours of full sun each day. They can grow in an apartment that can provide the light.

I have one but the leaves look different but during the winter most of the leaves fell off. It’s in an apartment.

They drop leaves for a lot of reasons: too dry, low humidity, low temperatures, low light and pests.

I had those in my yard in Florida so they are outside plants to me. I was surprised to see them as houseplants because they need a lot of sun. But then I also had golden pothos in a couple planters next to the pool and now I have one in my house here in Virginia lol 😁

These are so pretty, but yes they need a lot of light. My mom has had some luck with hers sitting right in an east facing window. I think an unobstructed south facing window may be your best bet though, and maybe add some grow lights to help it through the winter.
