Hi! Im trying to figure out what the hell is my humidity like : i live in a basement, all my plant’s soil takes forever to dry and has mold sometimes but my monstera’s leaf and my dieffenbachia tikki show signs of lack of humidity (curling and brown edges). I bought a humidifiers but im scared it will make the soil even more moist/humid. 🙃🙃🙃 cant buy a humidity meter cause I have a budget

    I’d just save and get a temp/humidity reader, they’re like $8.

Typically basements are damp so I'm thinking low humidity is not the issue but you won't know for sure until you have a way of measuring it.

Well the soil taking a long time to dry may not be because of high humidity. And the mold growing on the soil would be because it is damp, not necessarily because of high humidity. You need a meter for sure. How does the air feel to you? And do you have a problem with mildew?

I think what i do find on top of the soil is mildew so that would make the air more humid?

Probably not mildew on the soil. Probably just mold. But do you have a problem with mildew in rest of your apartment. Bottom line is you need a humidity meter. They are cheap.

If the soil is taking so long to dry that it’s getting moldy I’d say that’s a soil issue, not necessarily a humidity issue.

I use an indoor potting mix with perlite and add a cup of just perlite to it. Should i make it chunkier ?

I can’t give a blanket “yes”, but if, like me, you tend to have a heavy hand with the watering can, and your plants aren’t getting enough light, then yes, I’d recommend a very chunky mix.
