Can anyone help me with my lemon plant? It was planted from a seed a few years ago. At one point very early on it all but died and dropped all of its leaves however has since recovered to this point. What can I do to make it grow taller rather than outward, which is what it seems to be doing? It has a nice thick stalk now but it’s very short! Thank you!

    This is mine from seed and I have the opposite issue: I recently chopped this by 1/3 off the top and now finally have some branching. I think I waited too long though.

    Lemons are insane growers. I had one in the ground, and getting it to grow in any particular way was impossible. Anything I trimmed back would just grow in triplicate however it wanted. In theory, what you need is to pick a “leader”—one stalk that’s growing vertically that will be the main trunk—and leave that alone, while nipping back all the other branches. That should encourage the tree to grow up rather than out. But like I said, with lemons all bets may be off.
