I’ve had this rubber plant for several years, during which time it’s grown from a baby plant to over 5 feet/1.5 meters tall. Recently the older, larger leaves like this one have developed these brown patches and begun falling off. Is this to be expected, or should I be concerned about sun exposure, or over or under watering? If it’s helpful, it’s also been in the same pot for several years.

Since it’s been a little while, since it’s last repot, I’m thinking it might be root bound, and sometimes when this happens, soil becomes compacted and doesn’t absorb water properly essentially dehydrating the plant. I would check and see how the roots seem if they’re pretty compacted in there or coming out of the drainage holes repotting should fix it!

My method….if it needs repotting, I don’t care what time of year it is, I’ll repot. I’d rather have it go a bit dormant due to a bigger pot than have it struggle till spring. If I’m repotting in winter months, I’ll repot a day or two after a watering day and then wait a little longer till the next water to give it time to adjust. A good rule of thumb is if you have 50% (or above) roots to soil ratio it’s time to upsize. Wait a day or two after a watering and you should be able to gently remove it from the pot as a whole to check the roots.
