What is happening to my Poinsettia?! She’s losing all her leaves! She has some new ones but most of her leaves are gone.

    Poinsettias are finicky. Temperature drops, cold drafts, too much water, too little water…. Anything can make the leaves fall off. I tried to keep a poinsettia alive throughout the winter and it looked just like this and it didn’t get better. There are nice resources online about what to do with them throughout the year to get them nice and red for Christmas. It includes pruning and a strict light/dark circadian rhythm.

    Tell me where you live and what is your plant environment. If you want it to bloom for Christmas, all growth now should be dark green

      I live in Manitoba it is in my living room with some indirect light. It isn’t near the ac or furnace no drafts either. I repotted it in February of this year into a bigger pot

    Starting on 09/23/26, she will go into an environmentally controlled room, she gets covered with a box for 14 hours each evening/night, zero drafts/zero heat 65 degrees 24/7 until 11/26/26. I fertilize monthly during the off season, I pruned in February and repotted her. I will pull her out in full blooming Red color on Thanksgiving and keep her blooming until Valentine’s Day.

    It grows wild in Mexico, my daughter’s bloom year round.

    I took off all of her old leaves and cut back about four inches of the main stems, a nice surprise was a new stem came up and she is fuller than ever.
