I have a question about bottom watering and also using a humidifier. I primarily have peperomia plants and started bottom watering them. I have been filling a dish washing bin with about 2 inches of water and placing them in it. All of the pots have drainage holes. From what I’ve read it was recommended to leave them in the water for about a half hour. When I leave them in for that long the top two inches of soil are still dry. Should I just leave them in longer? Do I wait until the top of the soil feels moist? Am I doing something wrong? Also, are there any indoor plants that shouldn’t be bottom watered? I ordered a humidifier that is supposed to arrive today from Amazon. I was going to put it on one of the shelves of my plant shelving unit. (Pictured). Does it need to be a specific distance from the all my plants? I was concerned if I put it on a shelf it would be too close to the plants. This shelf is near my bed, too, so it would be helpful for me.

You either need to put more water in the bottom-waterer because of physics, or start combination top and bottom watering. Its really not good for your plants to be half dry.

You can either add more water after 30 minutes, then check the soil for dryness, or let it sit a little longer in the water. Sounds like you’re bottom-watering just fine 👍

Bottom watering is great for plants that like keeping their leaves dry, like jades, succulents, cacti, and especially peperomia. Top watering is fine for plants that can get their leaves wet, but bottom watering helps keep the top soil dry so you’re less likely of attracting pests too, so it’s up to you.

Thank you! I do find it easier and less messy compared to top watering, also!

The top being dry shouldn't be bad, the main concernis wetting the roots that soak it up. 30 mins is a good time. The water height should be 1/2 up the pot

Thank you. Knowing the height to fill the bin I put them in is very helpful!

Yes good tip I also wasn’t aware we should be filling the water so high. On some of my pothos I noticed they didn’t really suck any water up. So I just top watered. Could that be a soil issue? Or maybe I should add more draining holes 🤔

@BottsPots What kind of soil is it? If its heavy in peat or something it may be slow to soak up the water, vs soil based.
