Hi! I’m a new plant mom and I bought my first plant maybe 2 and a half weeks ago and I got her from Walmart😬she’s a pothos. I repotted it a couple days ago when I got a pot and the roots have grown into the shape of the pot and it probably most definitely has root rot. I repotted into a bigger pot with some fresh soil, but the roots were just so much idk what else I could’ve done. I’ve read that with pothos and root rot it’s just a loss. Do I take the loss or try to salvage her. She just looks so sad and I’m personally at a loss because she was thriving until she wasn’t

    I would take it out of the pot, get all the soil off even if you have to run it under the faucet and then cut off any of the roots that look really bad and spray the rest with hydrogen peroxide. Then pot it up.

    I second MummaDeb’s advice, and I’d suggest taking a couple of cuttings to try rooting in water separately. That way you’d still technically have the plant even if it’s not the full original.

    take all of the stems out! pothos are actually pretty simple and easy plants to care for that require low light and watering if they are originally cared for wrong. I have many different versions of pothos and have found the best ways to take care of them. I would first start by fully taking all of the stems out and observe them after washing the dirt off of the roots, if the roots look brown and rotted, as well as feel very weak, it’s time to snip them off! I know this may seem sad and annoying but they will do much better without them. the leaves that are already yellow are unfortunately not salvageable, but the rest totally are. you can begin to make cuts on the stems below the nodes *i usually do about 1-3 leaves per cutting*. you can also google more about propagating them, but after cutting them you should leave the stems in a jar of water for a few weeks, making sure the actual leaves are not touching the water, only the stems with the nodes, until you get strong, white, healthy roots. Change the water out about every week. For propagating pothos, it usually takes about 5 weeks for me so I can ensure that the roots are strong enough the hold up in soil. After they are potted you can also google more about how to not overwater them again, ensuring that they also have good drainage! hope this helps, sending good luck!

    Give her a nice chunky soil too! This will help keep her from getting root rot again. I found it any of the plants I’ve killed are usually caused by being too moist as opposed to too dry. That plant is very salvageable. You’ve got this.

    She may be under stress from all of the repotting. I often give plants an average pruning when they react in stress like that. Less foliage for them to maintain!

      Agreed! I prune my pathos a lot and they respond by growing more!

    If you really think that the plant will not survive, try propagating. It’s a life saver sometimes. Good luck with your pothos!
