Hi all! I just bought my first ZZ plant and ruby rubber plant. Do you recommend I repot them or keep them in their grow containers (and place them into pots decoratively)? Normally I repot fully, but was thinking recently maybe it would be easier to water them in their grow containers. Thank you!

Thank you so much! The plant store recommended repotting within the next 2 weeks but maybe I’ll wait. She said it was mostly to change out the soil—I’m happy to wait a few more weeks if you think it prudent! It is winter and my home is a bit on the cooler side. I have cactus soil so good to know for the ZZ! It’s going into my living room which has low-light.

I prefer to use plastic pots inside my decorative pots when possible bc then I don’t need saucers or cork bottoms for drips after watering and I don’t have to drill (have my husband drill) so many holes in pots. And one of my fave new ones actually broke trying to drill a hole last week 😢

And then it’s also not as heavy to transfer to my bottom watering “station”

Yes I was thinking the same since I don’t have that many saucers! Do you size up for decorative pot? For example the ruby is a 6” and the ZZ is a 4” in their containers. Should I get a 7” and 5” decorative pot respectively so they fit? I know, basic math…

Yes it’s just going to vary on the pot shape as sometimes lips will prevent it from fitting correctly. What I have been doing is purchasing a bulk amount of plastic pots to repot into that are clear so I can see roots better bc I’m neurotic like that and then I have extra empty ones I can take to the nursery or goodwill to see if they fit in a pot.
