What is it? I always thought it was just excess water.
1 LikeIt is mostly water, with very small amounts of minerals and carbohydrates. It’s called guttation.

Yup
1 LikeSo a chemical in the scientific definition of a chemical, but not a chemical in layman’s terms of what a chemical is.
1 LikeThat’s interesting. Do the plants still excrete the chemicals if watered properly? Does the excretion effect the plant at all?
1 LikeYeah they can. Guttation occurs when the roots take up more water than the above ground portion of the plant can use, so plants expel the extra water through the leaves. Some plants are more prone to guttation than others. My banana tree always does it even though I water it properly.
3 LikesAnd no it doesn’t hurt the plant at all. It actually helps them because it prevents them from getting edema which is what happens when it can’t expel the excess water.
