Hey everyone, I’m pretty new to collecting plants and I’m curious to hear your thoughts. I’d love to know about any mistakes you’ve made or tips you’d like to share. - What’s a plant you regret getting and why? - What’s a plant you think is a staple for any collection? - If you could go back and give your past self some beginner plant advice, what would it be?

Never heard of a nerve plant before, but I’ll make sure to steer clear 😂🤣 thank you!

    - a Peace Lily - they’re too dramatic lol. - heart leaf philodendron - use chunkier/well draining soil! And no plastic pots (to me it’s not worth the root rot chance- but I live in a humid area)

I mostly stick to plastic pots 🙃 Got it—avoid those. And since I don’t have a philodendron yet, that’s definitely next on my list. Thank you! 🙌🏼

The clear plastic nursery pots are great for keeping an eye on the root system and have great drainage holes. When I water, I drench the soil so the roots get a good drink and let the water drain. I set the clear plastic pot back in the cache pots. Some plants also do not do well in clay pots and of course, some do.

    1. Calathea; determined to be unhappy 2. Golden Pothos 3. Do your research on potting mix types and learn how to adjust your watering to your plant’s need and environmental factors and not some arbitrary schedule

I hate to admit it, but every Calathea I’ve had has eventually died on me, so I definitely feel your pain. I don’t think I have a pothos in my collection yet, so I’ll be adding one soon. I appreciate the advice😌

I’d have to disagree with you Erica. Pothos of almost any kind are the easiest plants. I tried to take a picture of my Mama golden pothos but it didn’t display. She started in a 4” pot years ago and is now in a 20” pot

Why do you disagree? what do you think about pothos?

A snake plant was my first. Now, I don’t really care much for them.

I’ve got a couple of snake plants myself, and I totally agree they’re super low maintenance and I really love them for that reason 🤣🤣

I’m not really a string of anything fan. I just think it’s hard to maintain when they’re so full on top! I became a pothos nut and I never thought I would lol they’re just so versatile! I love the different varieties. Also there are so many stunning philos out there. Also, it’s easier to save an underwatered plant than it is to save an overwatered

I like pothos too. Jas is right—there are just so many to choose from and my experience with them has been positive so far.

After going through several, I’ve decided String of Pearls aren’t for me. It’s easy to get caught up in the plant collecting when first starting but don’t get a plant just because it’s trendy. I ended up with several plants that I just didn’t like and weren’t bringing me joy. That being said, POTHOS AND ZZ PLANTS FTW. There’s so many pothos varieties and ZZ plants are the easiest plant to care for. Lastly check the soil moisture before watering, don’t follow a set schedule Welcome to your plant era! 😃

      What’s a ZZ plant?

They can tolerate low light, they store water in tubers so they can go weeks without watering.

-i regret nothing, but i probably shouldn't have bought three native plants (milkweeds and st johns wort) that were small/weak at the time i bought. They all died because they just weren't strong enough for planting. -i highly recommend ficus benjamina. It's just so nice to work with no matter how you want to raise it, and the easiest plant ever on propagation. -learn the basics on preventing root rot; paying a little attention when watering and using soil with good drainage prevents so many problems

    1. Alocasia Scalprum, she was so beautiful and she died on me, how could she?! lol (I’ll prob get another one—call me a masochist 😅) 2. Any monstera —the drama the beauty 😌 3. Don’t mist alocasia leaves, they’re prone to fungus rust—that’s how mine died, use a humidifier Happy planting!
